Renew Docklands Community Arts Space

James Wright, Matt Leaf, Polly Stanton and Nico Reddaway are contemporary Melbourne artists, curators, and events organisers that have rallied to the aid of the dismal state of social and cultural activity at that ghetto-by-design: Melbournes Docklands.
The group have begun to establish an arts space and studio at Waterfront City after having gained the support of the City of Melbourne to commandeer a defunct foodcourt that sits smack bang in the centre of this failed shopping and tourism mecca. But these guys are only just beginning their battle to inject some long-overdue and desperately needed joie de vivre. And as such, theyre hoping to attain a modest amount of donations, through pozible of course, to purchase some AV equipment and to dress the space out. It is also crucial to gain interest in their activities: this is an opportunity for artists and like-minded people to assert themselves at Docklands; the payoff being that the larger the patronage, the bigger the shift in the aesthetics and environment of the area. We look at Docklands today as a dystopian abyss. However, there is always the opportunity for change. And that change begins now.

The Arts Space is located on the piazza by the water & and can be accessed by catching the 86 Tram to itsterminus at Waterfront City.

Hayley Walker (Sketch)

Sketch has just returned to Melbourne after a prolonged stint in the UK and Brisbane. She is quite an accomplished artist; having held shows in both London and Melbourne. Also having her shit together in a big way; the minute Hayley is back in town shes already got her works up on the walls at The Lounge on Swanston. I went down there the other night to meet this artistic upstart, and check out her works. And theyre very fine indeed (as youll see below). Hayley was also nice enough to provide us with a few wise words:
INFX: Whats been happening for the last few years?
Hayley: Ive spent a good part of that time working on the body of my International show Ego (or Alter Ego) which was what I called it when I took it to London.
INFX: How was the London scene -does it still inspire your work?
Hayley: The networks that I made there [are] a very important asset in this field of work. In terms of inspiration, I left feeling more inspired towards the graffiti art I do, as I spent a lot of time with street artists including close friends of Banksy.
INFX: I see. Well, youre back in Melbourne and have hit the ground running -what else is in store for us?
Hayley: I am currently organising a collaborative Melbourne based graffiti show with local talent here, which will hopefully be showing in August.
INFX: And what have you been up to in the Studio?
Hayley: I am currently working on one large piece, in more of my linear, black and white busy composition style, which I am aiming to exhibit around November this year.
The Ego works will don The Lounge walls until 8th May; so be sure to checkem out next time youre having a drink or three up there.

Metro Graff Three

Here we have the third video in the Metro Graff series that documents Melbourne graffiti.

This instalment features an introduction by Victor Lancaster -you will know Victor as the seemingly soiled and dishevelledbumbusking on the city streets with his home-made drum kit. However, Victor is also on the arts scene and is one talented musician. He has recently released an album, and he composed an electronic music track to accompany an Anthony Lister project in Hosier Lane. The video, proper, features live graff painting on the city streets -by the likes of Bailer, Sofles, Caper, Facter and a bunch more. Shot principly on Union Lane, and Finlay Lane; the video is accompanied by The Nextmen trackSpin It Round‘. Enjoy.

Primary Suspects (Reka)

What would the Melbourne graff scene be without our beloved Reka? Itd have nothing on the contemporary Euros or Californians that’s for sure. I remember riding the Franga/ Dandy line back in 2002; everyday relishing the Reka characters adorning the embankment walls along the lines -particularly between South Yarra and Malvern.
The once elusive Reka has since inspired legions of next-generation writers and toys, whilst building an artistic practice that has seen him adorn the walls & galleries of New York, San Fran, LA, Berlin etc. One of the founding members of the EverFresh Crew and Skinny White Boys stalwart, Reka continues to aspire to great heights, luckily, taking us punters along for the ride! Now, witness the Primary Suspects show at the nucleus of Melbs fine art graffiti community: Backwoods Gallery - 2nd until 18th March, Easey St. Collingwood:

Klara

Klara is quite lovely: easy going with a can-do attitude. And do she does -you will witness Klaras paste-ups all over town: often without realising it is her handiwork. But there is no missing the quality of her exploits, and this West Australian natives quest to make her art happen here in Melbourne. Klara was happy to meet me in the studio last week to interview herself with the aid of some super-maxxed up technology bonuses. Check it out:

The M31 Hume

The Hume Freeway is the jewel in the crown of Victorias road network. This arterial runs from the M80 Western Ring Road in Melbournes North, to the New South Wales border at Albury-Wodonga, where the road continues as the A31 to Sydney. This freeway provides an uninterrupted dual-carriageway road along its entire length; after numerous rural city bypasses were constructed. The upgrade project was completed in 1996 with the Wangaratta Bypass section. The freeway was named in 1928 after Hamilton Hume (1797-1873), a famous explorer in the early 19th century who in 1824 (with William Hovell) were the first Eropeans to establish an overland route between Sydney and the newly established colonial outpost of Port Phillip -the original name of Victoria.

Writers Bench

Oriel Guthrie directs this documentary film tracing the development of the graffiti scene in Melbourne. Following on from her 2004 short Skip Hop, this film explores the stories and perspectives of those who grew up with the movement, and also those that are engrossed in its contemporary incarnation. It traces the Street Art scene in Melbourne from 1980 until the present day. The film explores its roots in political slogans, through to the development of styles that are uniquely Australian.

The film screens at ACMI weekly, on Saturdays 12th, 19th, 26th of November at 4pm.

The Salt of Life (Gianni Di Gregorio)

Gianni Di Gregorio‘s film is one of the more thoughtful and comically entertaining films due for release this year. Di Gregorio (Writer/Director of 2008s acclaimed Gomorrah) both directs and plays the leading role in this wistful comedy; markedly titled Gianni e le Donne (Gianni & The Women) in his native Italian. Gianni (the leading character, and not to be confused with the Actor/Director himself) has recently reached a turning point in his life: the onset ofold age‘. Having been made redundant from work, he finds himself mindful of not only his aging face & body; but of his relevance to the world-at-large.

The film is endearing to the plight of this ageing Italiano and charming in its climactic (yet restrained) final scenes. Its looks at the romanticism and sexuality of Gianni as he ponders his lacklustre marriage and his attention to (and from) young women. At once an humourous, heartfelt and honest observation of the aging man -The Salt Of Life is wonderfully shot with subtle stylisation. The film wont stir up any media-pack accolades but its surely a fine production; with a brilliant cast.

The Salt Of Life opens this week at Cinema Nova.

VeinOne

INFX recently caught up with one of NYC’s great artistic talents: VeinOne. A member of the well-respected Bt (Bronx Team) Crew, Vein was raised throughout New York City, growing up in all 5 boroughs; mostly in Queens. Our main man Vein started getting up proper from 1995 and has gone from strength-to-strength ever since. Here we have the interview wherein we see the story told from the man himself:

INFXYoure a born and bred New Yorker -how did you start up on the graff scene?

VeinOne: I remember being in 4th grade [and] I would see a couple of my friends practising their throw-ups. At first, I really didnt take it serious because I was a toy and I didnt really know a lot of writers.

INFXWhat do you think of the current generation of NYC writers?

VeinOne: I think most of the new writers are eager to paint but they have no one to guide them and teach them the history of this art. To the new writers I say everyone pretty much starts off toy but its where you take it from there. Keep doing your thing.

INFXWhat are your main artistic motivations or influences?

VeinOne: I would have to say my crew motivates me. We are a family of creative individuals and we all push each other to produce some dope walls.

INFXHow do you see yourself within theart marketas such?

VeinOne: I would love to make a living off my art, I hate being a starving artist.

INFXWhat new styles are you picking up at the moment, and where are you heading in terms of style and the future in general?

VeinOneLately, Ive wanted to focus more on background scenery painting. Im always open to learning new tricks and techniques or anything that can make me a better artist. As far as my style, well I guess well have to wait and see where it goes because its always evolving one way or the other.

So there you have it -And keep an eye out for VeinOne Bt hitting up the scene in a big way!

Secret Wars: Scale vs. Pierre Lloga

Last night brought the noise in the Melbourne Series 2 Semi-Final for Secret Wars.

Pierre Lloga this time went head-to-head with his sometime contemporary nemesis and the Round 1 champion, Scale. Despite the fact that the two share a notional bond with one another; Scale held no fear in depicting Pierre as pathetically imprisoned within his hand-written, pencil-pushing cell: A caricature buffeting itself with cat icons; typical of Llogas workIn the meantime though, Lloga invoked a graveyard-inspired defiance to see to it that Scale in turn was illustrated as the last of the graffer; as encrouched upon by Pierre himself, with the aid of a chainsaw!

In all earnestness: This battle has exhibited the best of art I have witnessed in the series so far.

So without further adieu, please do visit a video of the late evening:
